‘The Mandalorian’ 3×04 delves, finally, into Grogu’s past

And it brings us back to an actor that many may not have a good memory of…

    — SPOILERS of chapter 3×04 of ‘The Mandalorian’ —

After the “scare” of the previous episode, a chapter lasting more than 50 minutes that broke the tone of almost self-conclusive weekly adventures with the story of a scientist from the imperial side recruited (and betrayed) by the New Republic, ‘The Mandalorian’ has returned to its essence.

Written by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni chapter 20 of the Disney+ series, titled ‘The orphan’, The action continues in the Mandalorian lair after the redemption of Din Djarin. In it we see how a gigantic winged animal attacks them, kidnapping one of the apprentices, and Mando, Bo-Katan and the rest of the Children of the Guard must fight to recover it. A short episode (30 min.) and at the bottom, like the best of the Star Wars series. But, in an oversight, he has left us a very important detail from the past of one of the most beloved characters on the show: Grogu.

In a flashback, Grogu recalls the Order 66 attack and how Jedi Master Kelleran Beq brought him to safety.. Order 66 was a protocol engineered by Palpatine whereby the Republic clone troopers turned on and defeated the Jedi, allowing Palpatine to rise as Emperor of the Galaxy. Grogu remembers how a group of Jedis try to protect him while the clone army is killing them. Even so, at the last moment, Grogu finds his savior, Kelleran Beq, who is played by none other than Ahmed Best, the one in charge of giving life to the controversial Jar Jar Binksone of the most hated characters in the Star Wars saga.

This is one of the very few brushstrokes that ‘The Mandalorian’ has given us about the past of the so-called Baby Yoda, but it further strengthens the concept of its importance for the future of the galaxy as an essential figure in the Force.

Season 3 seems to focus on the Mandalorian Creed and legends like the Mythosaur, but this first look at Grogu’s origins may mean we have some vital revelation heading into the season 3 finale… Or even some other epic cameo like the one we live in the second. It wouldn’t be bad, right?
