“Shazam 2”: why was the first actress who played the adult Mary Marvel fired?

“Sazam! Fury of the Gods brings a lot of surprises, such as its after-concert scenes, but one detail that has fans curious is why there is one of the kids who doesn’t transform when he gets powers.

In the first film, “Shazam!” (2019), Billy Batson (Zachary Levi) ends up sharing the powers of the gods with his stepbrothers and thus they all become an adult version of them, but with superpowers.

In that film, the young version of Mary Bromfield was played by actress Grace Caroline Currey, while her adult counterpart was played by actress Michelle Borth. however then Borth is absent.

In superhero productions it is not unusual for actors to have multiple roles, like Adrianne Palicki who played 3 DC characters, and in the case of Grace Caroline Currey as an adult Mary, the justification is very reasonable.

“Shazam 2”: why was the first actress who made Mary Marvel an adult fired?

With the premiere of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ was able to see that not only do the step-siblings have new costumes, but their adult versions are the same as the first, except for Mary Bromfield.

Now when Mary yells “Shazam!” Instead of her transformation and adult version being done by actress Michelle Borth, it is Grace Caroline Currey herself who appears in her costume and abilities.

At the time, Borth was said not to have reached out about the follow-up because she was supporting a member of the Capitol storming team in 2021, she was also said to have scheduling conflicts, and she wasn’t even offered the salary she was asking for.

However, the most plausible explanation for Freddy Freeman, Eugene Choi, Pedro Peña, and Darla Dudley changing into their adult selves and Mary not, lies within the Shazam movie and comic book universe.

In DC comics such as “Kingdom Come” (1996) where Billy Batson appears as an adult, when he transforms into Shazam his appearance does not change, since his alter ego has always been a representation of what he would have looked like when he grew up.

In the same way, in the first film Mary was supposed to come of age, but in the sequel (two years later) she is already an adult, so her transformation is subtle.

As in real life, Grace Caroline Currey is already 26 years old and has stopped seeing herself as a girl, in ‘Shazam! 2’ Mary is already 21 years old and doesn’t need to look any different when she gets her powers.

Even the fact that she doesn’t change in a mainstream version can be traced back to the Golden Age of comics (1938-1956), when Mary Marvel debuted and her powers came from different gods than Shazam/Captain Marvel.

Then, when the stories were published by Fawcett Comics, Mary activated her powers with the magic word, but her appearance always remained the same, unlike Billy who became an adult when he was a child.
