Minas e Energia wants to expand oil exploration, including on the Equatorial Rim

The Ministry of Mines and Energy announced this Friday that it will launch a program to increase investment in oil and gas exploration and production, including new frontier areas, such as the Equatorial Margin, where there are difficulties in obtaining environmental licenses.

The program, called “Potencializa E&P”, aims to transform Brazil into the fourth oil producer in the world and will be presented at the next meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), still without a definite date, and will work on critical points for the exploration for oil in frontier areas and encourage investment in mature fields.

In addition, the program intends to promote regional development, encouraging independent oil and gas producers, whose actions generate increased revenues, taxes, government participation, jobs and income, the briefing said.

“We have a window of opportunity, we cannot miss the new pre-salt which could be located on the equatorial margin and which will be the passport for the future of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil,” Minister Alexandre Silveira said in a statement. .

The ministry also said that new exploratory frontiers need to be developed such as the Brazilian equatorial margin, which extends from the coast of Rio Grande do Norte to Oiapoque (AP). Petrobras has a deepwater rig idle off the coast of Amapá, costing more than $500,000 a day, pending the issuance of the proper license to explore the region, the ministry said.
