France bans TikTok and other entertainment apps on working phones

The French government has identified cybersecurity and data protection risks in recreational apps, including the CandyCrush game

France announced this Friday (March 24, 2023) that it is immediately banning government-operated mobile phones from having “recreational applications,” such as TikTok, Twitter, Netflix and the game CandyCrush.

The government has not yet drawn up a definitive list of which apps would be banned, according to the French newspaper le Monde. However, in an interview, Stanislas Guerini, Minister of Public Administration, cited TikTok, Twitter, Netflix and even Candy Crush as examples.

According to Guerini, the government has determined that these “recreational” apps pose a huge risk to the cybersecurity and sensitive data protection of public officials, as well as the government itself. All this after an analysis by the National Agency for Information Systems Security (Anssi) and the Interministerial Digital Department (Dinum).

CHECK IT OUT: POLITICAL website reported on Wednesday (22.mar) that French members of Congress “recommended” to their colleagues to limit the use of several networks due to concerns about espionage and cyber security.

The MPs have also recommended to colleagues to use French software and programs for the development of the projects, for fear of Chinese and American surveillance.

According to the report, they argued that “personal data collected through the platforms – including contacts, photos, videos, and professional and personal documents – could be used by foreign intelligence services.”
