The truth is that a wave of macho hatred accompanied the premiere of ‘Captain Marvel’, but the Oscar-winning actress did not think only of that with fear.
Four years have passed since Brie Larson broke the mold with ‘Captain Marvel’, the first Marvel film with a female lead. One that also made her main character, Carol Danvers, the most powerful in the entire MCU. With that level of exposure and attention, and with fans coming in pretty pissed off about the continued delay of ‘Black Widow’ and other loud Neanderthals talking about forced inclusion, it’s only natural that Brie Larson felt afraid. “I was scared of what would happen to me,” the Oscar-winning star has said about her thoughts when it comes to entering the MCU.
In a interview with Harper’s Bazaar which has filled the actress’s Instagram, Larson delves into the importance of this decision for her career, the risks it entailed and also the exposure and fame it promised.
Let’s remember that Larson, after appearing briefly in ‘Ms. Marvel’, is going to return to his old ways with ‘The Marvels’, a film whose premiere is scheduled for November 10, 2023, and which was part of the first steps of Phase 5 of Marvel.
I was afraid of what would happen to me. I thought: ‘What world is this? What are the choices I have to make as an artist?’
Of course, and although he had already won an Oscar, the MCU gave him much more massive fame. Something that may sound good for a star but also be a double-edged sword:
Anytime I feel like I’m being put too much on a pedestal, it’s my job to figure out how to remove that from within.
But Brie Larson, who has always shown her love for pop culture and comics, is very clear that it has been the best thing to join the Marvel Universe.
What has touched my heart the most has been how many different types of people respond to Carol. She is much more than me, and much more than what my body has. Different sexual orientations or ways you identify with gender or race. Going more beyond of that. And that is what has excited me. I was like, ‘I want to work really hard to create a symbol that other people can take and use and feel empowered’, that was it.
We’ll see if ‘The Marvels’ is that movie that raises a bit the clear descending character of the MCU feature films since ‘Endgame’. On November 10, 2023, with the premiere of ‘The Marvels’, Brie Larson will clear us up.
