The viral image of Pope Francis in the ‘overcoat’ was generated by artificial intelligence

The Midjourney tool allows users to issue commands and receive completely new images

Viral on social media since yesterday, the image of Pope Francis wearing an “over-sized” coat inspired by hip hop fashion does not exist. It is in fact creation through artificial intelligence (AI), which, in addition to texts, can also create extremely realistic illustrations.

The drawing of Pope Francis was created by a user of the online forum incomewho used the tool Mid-trip, created by the homonymous company. The “photograph” was posted on the forum on March 24, but only went viral the following day, Saturday, when it was reposted from a profile on Twitter.

The illustration is very realistic, but it is possible to notice some traces of computer creation, such as the shadows in the “photograph” and the metallic colors. Another aspect that indicates the use of AI is in the hands: traditionally, this is one of the “Achilles heels” when it comes to AI-generated imagery.

Midjourney is similar to ChatGPT, the OpenAI chatbot released last November. In both tools it is possible to give commands to the program and, in a few seconds or minutes, the result is delivered. The difference between the two is that Midjourney creates images, while ChatGPT produces text.

This week, former US President Donald Trump also made his image go viral in unreal situations, also made by Midjourney.
