The Italian government wants to ban the production and marketing of synthetic food and feed, according to the draft of a decree that will be presented this Tuesday (28) to the Council of Ministers by the owner of the agriculture and food sovereignty portfolio, Francesco Lollobrigida.

In the text, still under discussion, products for human or animal consumption that are “consisting of, isolated from or produced from cell cultures or tissues derived from vertebrate animals for use in the preparation of food, drink or feed” are prohibited.

In addition to domestic production and marketing, the export or import and distribution of the items will also be prohibited. The penalties for those who break the rules vary between 10,000 and 60,000 euros (from approximately R$ 56,100 to R$ 336,600), in addition to the seizure of the material.

Since he took office, Giorgia Meloni’s government has declared “war” on synthetic food. Lollobrigida himself, in November, launched a formal investigation to investigate the effects of foods of this type on human health.

In December, the prime minister said he considered synthetic foods a threat to Italy’s agricultural tradition and that his government “intends to fight artificial feeding in any case”. .
