Crazy Casting & Retro SF: Wes Anderson Releases Asteroid City Trailer With Scarlett Johansson & Tom Hanks

How do you know Wes Anderson’s movie? With pastel colors, symmetrical composition of frames, cold humor that often hits the mark. And his castings, always more impressive from one feature to the next.

Asteroid City, due in our theaters on June 21, will be no exception, and its trailer proves it, even if not every actor and actress will be there.

However, we meet newcomers such as Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Matt Dillon, Sophia Lillis or Steve Carell, along with regulars from the world of directors such as Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton (back), Jeffrey Wright, Liev Schreiber. Or Rupert Friend. Which is already tough in itself.

But the trailer reminds us that we will also have to count on Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Hong Chow (currently starring in Whale), Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum or even Margot Robbie. Only this. We found so many people on the steps of May’s Cannes Film Festival that Asteroid City is one of the most credible candidates for selection.

Wes Anderson could make a third entry in the competition in 2021 with The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, which also opened in 2012. That won’t be the case with Asteroid City, as the lucky winner should be released in French cinemas at the same time.

But in these images we find the spirit of the Moon Kingdom, which suggests that a romance between two teenagers will be at the center of the story. Except the scout camp will be replaced by a space convention that brings together parents and children in a fictional town in the American desert in the 1950s.

A 3rd Kind of Date for Wes Anderson?

Therefore, Wes Anderson will not appear in the text for this eleventh feature film, in which the usual Bill Murray, who was replaced by Steve Carell, will not appear. But this absence is compensated by the rest of the cast, absolutely insane, in this story, which seems to be so much.

After celebrating the summer with him, Wes Anderson fans will have a second encounter with the director as The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, directed by Roald Dahl, will be released on Netflix later this year.
