While having different histories, there’s no way not to compare the comedy speaking to reality with Ted Lasso. The first reason is that the new series is from the same creators of the plot with Jason Sudeikis, Brett Golstein and Bill Lawrence, who say goodbye after three seasons.
Therefore, speaking to reality acquires characters who play funny moments, but who struggle with their own problems. In the case of the new series, we see three psychologists who are very good at their job and who try to use their personal experiences with clients.
But right at the beginning we are struck by the untimely death of Tia (Lilan Bowden), wife of protagonist Jimmy (Jason Segel), after an accident. Tragedy affects not only the widower, but also his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), best friend Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Paul (Harrison Ford), a family friend.
Jimmy, Gaby and Paul work together in a therapy clinic and their personal and professional lives intertwine. Like a good drama, the series speaking to reality it is capable of moving us by making us laugh, and in order for this objective to be achieved successfully, it is necessary to be delicate in approaching the issues.
The series talks about death and mourning, but not in a dark or rude way, but as something that is part of life and leaves sequels for those who stay. While those who leave will always be remembered, those who stay here must adjust to their absence and explore a new life.
speaking to reality it shows that it is not easy to deal with one’s pain and also those who are dealing with it, as we have seen in the troubled and trauma-filled relationship between Jimmy and his daughter Alice. But before introducing us to deeper emotions, the series caught our attention as a different way to do psychology.
At the start, speaking to reality it involved Jimmy developing new ways of caring for his patients, leaving the office, and giving honest and even unethical opinions. This is how some secondary characters were included in the plot, such as Sean (Luke Tennie) and Grace (Heidi Gardner), but soon this detail of the premise was left out.
Even so, the Apple TV+ production does not lose sight of its approach, managing, in each installment, to bring a sense of comfort with a light humor. In a final comparison with Ted Lassothe series speaking to reality it’s not as deep as it is, it lacks invading multiple layers to equally thrill.
The series speaking to reality it brings a sense of familiarity and calmness not just with a good proposal, but with a well-wrapped script that fits perfectly into the quiet environment of suburban Los Angeles. With no visual pollution, clear dialogue, and charismatic cast, the storyline is a good bet for awards in the coming years.
