With rain for most of the training session, the session was a good opportunity to test the intermediate compounds. But it gets in the way…
The second free practice session in Australia was already different due to the weather. If FP1 was sunny, FP2 had heavy clouds and even drizzle in some parts of the track. This has certainly influenced the data collection of the teams, but nothing accentuated.
FP2 started with the teams in a hurry, trying to make the most of their training, as the first session was quite bumpy with red flags and sliding problems. The tactic was the one everyone expected: fast lap and then race simulations, in those long runs.
By the way, Ferrari has once again devoted the majority of training sessions to these simulations, also because it is one of the Italian team’s weak points so far this season.
On the medium tyres, Fernando Alonso set the first flying lap of the session, setting the best first sector and beating the Red Bulls, who set their first times with soft compounds; 1m18s887 was the time of the Spaniard. Max Verstappen again struggled in places and made some breakaways.
With 49 minutes left in the session, Sérgio Pérez was flying on his soft tyres, making the first two sectors of the track and would have leapt into first position, but was hindered and complained a lot, as did Carlos Sainz, who had in front of him Verstappen .
In the 43-minute regression at the end of FP2, the rain increased and this hampered the work of the teams on track, who remained in the pits and then only lap times were carried out with intermediate tyres, leaving the times table unchanged.
On the positive side, it was interesting for the riders to see the wet tire conditions and also to try some wet conditions, even if there is no forecast for Sunday’s race. Fernando Alonso led the session with a time of 1m18s887s, Leclerc four-tenths and Verstappen six, but without many conditions to improve.

FP3 will take place this Friday, at 10.30pm Brasilia time.
