An Israeli attack in Syria on Friday killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guards officer, the Guard said, while the second attack near Damascus in two days indicates an increasingly intense Israeli effort to counter Tehran’s position in the country.
There was no immediate statement from Israel, which generally refuses to comment on reports of attacks in Syria.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announces the martyrdom of guard Milad Haydari, one of the military advisers and officers of the IRGC,” during the Israeli attack, the IRGC said in a statement reported by Iranian media.
LaGuardia has promised to respond, saying the “criminal attack” on the outskirts of Damascus will not go “unanswered,” Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.
The airstrike was Israel’s sixth in Syria this month, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Israel has for years conducted strikes against what it describes as Iran-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran’s influence has grown since it began supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that began in 2011.
Iran says its officers are serving as advisers in Syria at the invitation of the government in Damascus. Dozens of IRGC members, including senior officers, have been killed in Syria during the war.
Citing a military source, Syrian state media reported that Israel fired missiles shortly after midnight that hit “a location in the Damascus countryside,” without specifying.
