Tornado hits the capital of Arkansas, injuring hundreds

A strong tornado hit the city of Little Rock in the US state of Arkansas on Friday, damaging several buildings and collapsing walls, uprooting trees, overturning vehicles and leaving hundreds injured, according to news reports.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences declared a high-fat event after a “catastrophic” tornado hit Little Rock on Friday, a CBS-affiliated broadcaster said, adding that hundreds were injured.

Aerial footage released by The Weather Channel showed a badly damaged area of ​​the city covering several city blocks, with several houses missing their roofs and walls, some collapsed, and overturned vehicles in the streets.

The National Weather Service (NWS) also reported that tornado activity destroyed several homes and downed trees in and around Little Rock.

The tornado struck the Arkansas capital as a huge burst of extreme spring weather swept across much of the United States, threatening the country’s central region, from Texas to the Great Lakes, with dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Tens of millions of Americans in the Great Plains, Midwest, South and East were on high alert for various weather hazards Friday afternoon, evening and weekend, the NWS said.
