Danny Elfman explains the musical battle of “Doctor Strange 2”: it happened at the last minute

Although the end of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was explained by a Marvel writer, there are still many doubts among fans about the film.

One of them was the musical battle that can be seen in a scene from the second movie Sorcerer Supreme. Danny Elfman, the famous composer who was in charge of the music for “Doctor Strange 2”, explained it.

Music battle in “Doctor Strange 2”

To explain the background of this scene, it is first necessary to compose it. After confronting the Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange and Christine Palmer land in a universe destroyed by an “invasion” (in other words, by the collision of two universes).

There Doctor Strange encounters a bad variant of himself, which has become dark thanks to the frequent use of Darkhold.

However, for Stephen of Earth 616, the only option to return to save America Chavez from Scarlet Witch’s hands is to remove Darkhold from its bad variant.

That’s why a fight begins between the two versions of Doctor Strange. But it is not any battle, because they use musical notes to attack each other, which when they collide with each other cause music. But what does this battle mean? This was explained by Danny Elfman, responsible for the soundtrack of the film.

Background of the battle music in “Doctor Strange”

In an interview with Collider, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” composer Danny Elfman revealed some details about the scene.

No wonder this crazy idea was the brainchild of director Sam Raimi, as his film is characterized by these unexpected and somewhat awful touches.

What is amazing is that Danny Elfman, who is a famous American musician, songwriter and producer, could not even grasp Reimi’s idea at first:

It was a lot of experimentation. When Sam described it to me, honestly, I could not even imagine what the hell he was talking about. He came back to me during the second round of filming for this scene and I said, “Okay, I think I get it,” and I started experimenting with all these different ideas because we weren’t sure how to approach it.

They had the idea that they wanted it to be a battle of classical music, but they did not know exactly which composers to turn to. The idea for Beethoven and Bach to use music came from Kevin Feige, president of Marvel:

First, he had several famous pieces of classical music flying up and down. At 11 o’clock, it was Kevin Feige, the president [de Marvel Studios], who said: “Let us really unite Beethoven against Bach.” Doctor Strange has Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony against Doctor Strange, which contradicts Toccata and Bach’s Fugue in a minor.

In addition, he stressed that the soundtrack for this particular scene was made at the last minute, which turned out to be quite a crazy but very fun process:

I did it again at 11 a.m., just a few weeks before the movie was released, on this crazy last-minute shoot. It was really fun. It combined perfectly. There were two or three different incarnations of this, trying to figure out what would end up. This was a pretty crazy last minute process.
