Barbieri downplays Vasco’s defeat in a friendly and confirms other tests up to the Brazilian debut

Cruz-Maltino plays a training match against Tupi-MG, this Monday, at CT Moacyr Barbosa

After Vasco’s 2-0 defeat by Athletic Club in São Januário, manager Maurício Barbieri downplayed the result. For the coach, the friendly is complementary to what the team does in training. In addition, it also serves to test, fix and improve aspects of each player for the debut of the Brazilian championship.

– It was a complementary activity to what we did. Of course, we always want to get it right and try to do everything. Make sure all errors are not displayed. But it’s an activity that complements what we’re working on, in a time when we’re getting to know each other better and experimenting with different ways of playing and doing things. As much as we kept the base, in some situations we tried to play differently – scored Barbieri. And he added:

– The activity showed that we need to improve some movement dynamics. We had a domain, but we were exposed at times. There are other problems we need to solve. Now it’s up to us to take advantage of the next activities of which we will have to fix the details to continue to grow and correct the mistakes. In addition to the technical and tactical aspects, it’s time for us to speak and demand in terms of mentality, attitude and way of seeing things. Ideally, it should be as good as possible. In many cases it is not. We have to correct the path.

Barbieri also stated that this long period of training for Vasco has been fruitful. This is because athletes who showed up later, or who were with the Selections or, even, came off an injury, will have the ability to pick up on the same pace as those who are at 100% from the start.

– It is the period of getting to know some players who arrived later, or who have had in the national team, or who have come from an injury. We arrived at a time in the league where there was a lot of playing and little training. This period is important to put them all on the same page, in terms of how to play. And also pass the variations. It always ends up being a period of lots of information. The game activity is an idea to complement what we do during the week. We continued training until the day before and then used the match as a complement. It’s natural that the players don’t arrive at the match so rested, because we have to take advantage of this period to work, look for different paths and see what goes well and what doesn’t. Gain experience in training and also in games. Try to understand what everyone can contribute the most, in which sector, function and in what way.

The Vasco coach also revealed that the team will play more friendlies and training matches. This Monday, Cruz-Maltino will face Tupi, from Minas Gerais, to coach Moacyr Barbosa. The club has not confirmed yet, but Minas’ squad will travel to Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

– Come to think of it, we have other activities planned. And we will follow this dynamic of experimentation, using variations and understanding what works best and what we still need to fix, to arrive as strong as possible at our championship debut.
