Pope Francis was discharged from the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome this Saturday morning (1st) and has already returned to the Vatican.
“I’m still alive,” he joked as he left the medical center.
The priest had been hospitalized since last Wednesday (29), when he fell ill at Casa Santa Marta, to be treated for infectious bronchitis.
“This morning, Saturday 1 April, Pope Francis was discharged from the A. Gemelli University Hospital. Before leaving the premises, the Holy Father greeted the Rector of the Catholic University, Franco Anelli, with his closest collaborators, the General Director of the Polyclinic, Marco Elefanti, the General Ecclesiastical Assistant of the Catholic University, Monsignor Claudio Giuliodori , and the team of doctors and health workers who have assisted him in recent days”, reads a note released by the Holy See press office.
Upon leaving the hospital, the Argentine got out of the car leaning on a cane, but on his feet and spent a few minutes talking to the journalists present at the scene.
“I simply felt bad, but I wasn’t afraid”, declared the Pope, who confirmed that “tomorrow I will celebrate Palm Sunday”.
The head of the Catholic Church also embraced a couple of parents who lost their daughter last night and stopped to pray with them.
“You weren’t even in the hospital,” the reporters noted.
Francisco then said: “Did you see what a mess? I remember something an old man older than me said to me, ‘I saw death coming’, it’s bad huh,” he joked.
The Holy Father still continued to mock his health and the mobilization of the press. “I followed the papers,” he said.
“Do we write well?” asked the journalists. “Yes, yes, bravo, thanks for your services,” she replied.
During his hospitalization, Jorge Bergoglio even ate pizza on Thursday evening with the medical team and security guards (30) and visited the hospital’s pediatric oncology center, as well as baptizing a newborn.
Finally, he spoke once again about his experience in the hospital and explained that he felt “a lot of tenderness”.
“Being a nurse, being a doctor, being a healthcare professional, there’s a lot of tenderness with patients. You know, patients are capricious, all of them.
I really admire the people who work here, doctors, nurses, I’ve seen how they take care of the children with affection”, he added, also referring to the child he baptized yesterday.
“Thanks for the service, now I will sleep four days,” he joked again.
Francis, 86, is already in the Vatican, where tomorrow (2) he will preside at Mass on Palm Sunday, the ceremony that kicks off the celebrations of Holy Week in St. Peter’s Square. .
