Tonight on Netflix: A movie 90s kids will definitely remember

From the age of 8

When the Ugly Monsters—treacherous little aliens from Mount Moroni—descend into the underworld of Looney Tunes and threaten to take over Looney Tunes as their park’s main attraction, things turn dire. To escape from this trap, Bugs Bunny and his friends invite the little invaders: play basketball.

If the Looney Tunes win, they’re out of the woods, but if the Monstars are declared victorious, they can carry out their disastrous project. To set the odds, Warner’s animated mascots decide to take drastic measures and call upon the greatest player of all time: Michael Jordan.

Hitting theaters in 1997, right in the middle of the decade, especially rich with nostalgic nuggets for viewers who made their first memories there, Space Jam is one of those movies you can’t forget when you grow up.

Combining live action and traditional animation like Mary Poppins and especially Who Framed Roger Rabbit (released 8 years earlier and in which we could already see the Looney Tunes), this Joe Pitka feature marks the first real-life adventure of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck. and other Warner characters on the big screen.

True to their reputation with all kinds of visual gags, the famous little band members never cease to make us laugh from beginning to end of the film. But this over-the-top humor is complemented by other features: a truly menacing villain, as only the 90s offered, and a first-rate soundtrack, punctuated by songs from Seal or Technotronic.

What will they like?

  • Universal pranks from our animated friends who compete with ingenuity for our entertainment. Special mention to Taz, Sam the Pirate, and of course Tweety and Grominette.
  • The basketball sequence, especially the final game, was very well paced and immersive.

What might be bothering them:

  • Mr. Swackhammer, the big villain of the movie, with his big cigar and Machiavellian plan.
  • Monsters, in the second part of the movie. After stealing the skills of famous NBA players, small aliens turn into real monsters.
