The Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has closed the evidence collection phase in a trial accusing former President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro of abuse of power and improper use of the media for having convened a meeting with ambassadors in July 2022 foreigners to spread unfounded suspicions about the electronic ballot box and attack the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
If convicted, Bolsonaro could lose his political rights for eight years and be out of elections for that period.
Driven by the PDT, this is the most advanced process that can make the former president ineligible.
Once the preliminary investigation phase is over, the parties have a deadline to formulate their own conclusive arguments. The plenary judgment of the action should take place after the Electoral Prosecutor has issued its definitive opinion, but there is still no date set for the start.
Attached to this deed is a draft coup decree seized by the Federal Police at the home of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres in an inquiry into extremist acts at the Three Powers headquarters on 8 January. The ongoing investigations into the STF into Bolsonaro’s attacks on the electoral system were also included.
Former Chancellor Carlos Alberto França, former Chief of Staff Ciro Nogueira Lima Filho, Anderson Torres and former Special Secretary for Strategic Affairs Flávio Augusto Viana Rocha are among the defense witnesses already heard.
One of the witnesses presented by the defense did not testify, Army Reserve Artillery Colonel Eduardo Gomes da Silva. Presented by Bolsonaro as an “intelligence analyst”, he was the protagonist of a live broadcast in which the former president also attacked electronic voting machines.
Meeting with 70 diplomats at the Alvorada Palace, Bolsonaro claimed, without evidence, that the TSE had admitted to the Federal Police that hackers could change the names of candidates and migrate votes from one candidate to another.
