The Mandalorian: Why Anakin Skywalker Didn’t Appear in the Star Wars Series

Star Wars fans have been waiting for Grog to return to the Jedi Temple for a long time and they got him in The Mandalore Season 3 Episode 4. While Dean Jarrin’s (Pedro Pascal) little companion is with the armor, he recalls a painful moment from his past: his final moments in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as Order 66, or the Purge of the Jedi, began.

This section then takes place alongside the events of the Revenge of the Sith movie. Several Jedi sacrifice themselves to allow Grogu to escape. And the latter is saved by Jedi Master Kelleran Beck (Ahmed Best, who already played Jar-Jar Binks in the prologue).

Some fans were hoping to see Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) turn to the dark side and be responsible for the deaths of many Jedi and especially many rookies like Grogu at the temple. And the creators of The Mandalorian thought about it, but didn’t follow through with the idea.

Anakin Skywalker could have been in the Mandalorian

Producer Dave Filoni revealed Insider at PaleyFest in Los Angeles that he and Jon Favreau were indeed destined to cast Anakin Skywalker in The Mandalorian. But that idea has been shelved for now, as the duo wants to be very careful about using iconic characters from the saga in the series:

“I briefly discussed it with John and said that there might be an opportunity. We always have to look at all the possibilities. Ultimately, with a character like Anakin, one of George’s characters, we have to be very careful how we do it. Our own. It’s very special when we do that. We do. So I think we quickly moved away from that idea.”

Dave Filoni didn’t want Grogu to be overshadowed in this flashback, which features him in the presence of Anakin Skywalker. We wanted Grog to have his own story and we wanted to tell it in a slightly different way., he explained. But Dave Fillon finds it interesting “To think they were so close together”.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 4 flashback also gives fans a glimpse into how close the Jedi and apprentices were. “It’s interesting to think that even when Anakin was a little boy, he was in the temple with Grogus. So there are all kinds of weird theories that you can come up with in a fun way.”he said.

So should we expect more flashbacks to Grogu? Since the series is as much about him as it is about The Mandalorian, the odds are high. And even if Anakin Skywalker wasn’t in this particular flashback, there’s nothing stopping him from appearing in another episode of The Mandalorian if the creators let themselves call the character.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian is streaming now on Disney+.
