The Roy family has started the fourth season of ‘Succession’ by recycling situations and plots from previous episodes. Is it worth continuing?
The latest season of ‘Succession’ has launched on HBO Max, and we have already been able to taste the first two chapters with the new (?) adventures and misadventures of the Roy family. And I question the “new” thing, because At the moment, all we have seen are situations and plots recycled from previous seasons. Have you run out of ‘Succession’ ideas? Should it have ended in its third season?
The season 3 finale of ‘Succession’ was a blow to the young Roy. Kendall, Shiv and Roman try to stop Waystar’s merger with GoJo because they don’t trust Matsson, Alexander Skarsgård’s character who is running for the company’s new CEO, but they get a total punch on the table from old Logan against the rebellion that their offspring were preparing.
The brothers were united for the first time in 29 episodes against their father without any of them, not even the wayward Roman, backing down at the last moment. But Tom found out about his move and, betraying his wife Shiv, told Logan. And the Roy patriarch was making a master move, changing the terms of a contract with his ex-wife that allowed his children to block the sale of the corporation. All of this at a wedding, something that the series had already exploited in previous chapters when Shiv and Tom got married.
Everything seemed to anticipate a new scenario. However, What has been seen in these two episodes overturns what has been proposed and returns to the typical topics of the seriesleaving us with a feeling of deja vu…
— Spoilers for the first two episodes of ‘Succession’ Season 4 —
The thing promised in the first episode, the beginning of the end of ‘Succession’. The three brothers were looking to start their own media company from scratch, Logan philosophizing about the meaning of life and if there is something after death and Greg, the “dumb” cousin who is always taken advantage of by everyone, seemed take packing as another cruel and ruthless member of the Roy family. Then the first repeat sign appears: Pierce.
The Pierce news company was the object of Logan’s desire for much of the series, his white whale, and after much back and forth and several failed purchases, the subject seemed forgotten. But suddenly, and without much explanation, the operation has been reactivated. And, of course, Kendall, Shiv and Roman try to boycott the purchase by taking the company away from their father. Meetings with Nana again, Kendall risking everything with more optimism than real options, Shiv once again sacrificing his marriage for greed, Roman being manipulated without being convinced or having his own ideas…
But the thing do not ends there. Connor, the fourth brother who always stays away from these issues, gets married. Yeah, another wedding in which the stab wounds are going to fly. And, when the skull trio had already made the deal with Pierce and only had to accept the sale of Waystar to GoJo to receive the money and fly, Sandi and Stewy with their forked tongues convince them to stop the deal to try to get some more money.. At least to Shiv and Kendall, because Roman first says yes but then he leaves with his father and everything indicates that he will blow up the opposition to the sale because Logan has once again gifted his ears with false promises.
That is to say: we have another wedding in which there will be a family breakdown (like Shiv’s or Logan’s ex-wife), we have again the purchase of Piercewe have one Roman’s new betrayal (something that already happened in Kendall’s first attempt)… And, as if this were not enough, we have back to Greg babbling as he tries to sort out, under pressure, Tom’s dirty laundry. Just as it has been doing for 3 seasons without any evolution.
‘Succession’ has been (and is) one of the best series of its time, but the best series in history have to, in addition to being good, know when to stop. And the HBO series is showing signs that perhaps they are stretching the rubber so much that it has already given itself. It’s still early There are 8 chapters left and I’m sure we still have many surprises, but then… Why so much filler? Why go around the same thing? Why repeat over and over again something that we have already seen?
