Trump denies pressuring Ukraine to hand over Donetsk to Putin

Republicans have said 78% of the region is already under Russian control

US President Donald Trump denied on Monday (20) that he told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that his country should cede the Donetsk region to Russia, otherwise it will be destroyed.

The statement denies the news released last Sunday by the American press (19), according to which the Republican had put pressure on the Ukrainian leader, during a meeting at the White House, to accept the conditions proposed by Moscow to end the war, such as “giving up all of Donbass”.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the issue had not been discussed between the two leaders and he returned to advocating a negotiated solution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“No, we have never discussed it. We think that what they, Russia and Ukraine, should do is simply stop at the lines where they are, the battle lines, right now, because the rest is very difficult to negotiate,” he said, quoted by the US and Ukrainian press.

The American leader also stressed that the Donetsk region should remain as it currently is, noting that in his opinion Russia controls “78% of the territory.”

“They can negotiate something later. But I say: Stop fighting, stop killing people,” Trump suggested, referring to the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, which has been the scene of intense fighting since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.

In the same context, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had taken control of a small village in the Donetsk region of southeastern Ukraine. This was announced by the state agency Tass.

Russian authorities have not specified the name of the occupied location and the claims have not yet been independently verified.

The Donetsk region is one of four Ukrainian provinces that Moscow claims as part of its territory, despite international condemnation and Ukraine’s armed resistance.
