Haddad says he had a ‘great’ meeting with Campos Neto ‘about everything’

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said he had a routine meeting with Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto on Monday which he described as “very good”.

According to Haddad, the two talked “about everything”, without a specific agenda.

“It was a routine meeting where we talk about various topics, line up information, exchange information and establish some protocols on how to forward things. It was very nice, we talked about everything, there was no specific agenda,” Haddad told reporters by order of the Ministry of Finance, where the meeting was held.

Haddad and Campos Neto had their first official meeting since the government presented its proposal for the new fiscal framework on Thursday last week.

On the occasion, in a separate event, during a press conference on the Quarterly Inflation Report, Campos Neto even stated that he had not yet examined the “details” of the proposal. Haddad on Friday said Campos Neto had made “very few reservations” about the picture.

The meeting between Haddad and Campos Neto on Monday comes at a time when the government is putting pressure on the central bank. In an interview with Globo News on Monday, Haddad said there is room for a cut in the base interest rate (SELIC), currently at 13.75% per annum.
