Game of Thrones: HBO discusses new prequel about conquering Westeros

HBO could dig even deeper into the Targaryen family’s past: the network is actively discussing a new prequel to game of Thrones which will tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.

The information was exclusively revealed by the Variety. The search for a screenwriter is still ongoing, and while the project is in its early stages, HBO is eager to move forward and put it into development. The project could also have a feature-length component, with HBO and Warner Bros. producing a film that would lead to the potential series.

The series will follow the journey of Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they use their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, with the exception of Dorne. With that, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen dynasty. These events occurred about 300 years before the events of game of Thrones.

From the worldwide success of game of Thrones, HBO has developed several series based on the world created by George RR Martin. Of the many projects announced over the years, only House of the Dragon advanced to date. The series premiered its first season in August 2022, quickly getting its second season renewed less than a week after launch. The second season is currently in production.

The only other project game of Thrones filming all the pictures to date was the abandoned pilot of The Long Night with Naomi Watts. That project was finally scrapped in 2019, the same day that House of the Dragon got the green light.

The decision to expand the world of game of Thrones and potentially tying into a film isn’t surprising, as the series remains one of the most cherished intellectual properties in the Warner Bros. library. Discovered.

Legacy media companies have also been working on building interconnected film and television universes around their larger titles, such as Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, for some time. Warner Bros. Discovery is currently working on a rebooted DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

According to Variety, HBO declined to comment on the new prequel game of Thronesand there is still no forecast for the start of production.
