Tonight on TV: Forget Pablo Escobar, the real-life drug lord Tom Cruise

After seeing Argo, screenwriter Gary Spinelli became interested in a scandal around the same time. Thus, he discovers the existence of former TWA pilot Barry Sell, who in the late 1970s became a drug trafficker while working for the CIA and leading a family life with his wife and children.

Immediately impressed with the project, producer Doug Davison entrusts the production to Ron Howard before it falls into the hands of Doug Liman. The latter then gives the lead role to Tom Cruise, who has already directed the sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow.

On the one hand, the actor continues to impress with his ease and skill in performing stunts, in this case during the airplane flight scenes, which he performed himself as a certified pilot and eager.

On the other hand, under the direction of Doug Liman, Tom Cruise again plays on his image, taking part in a role far from his usual performances. Having embodied cowardice in Edge of Tomorrow, he here defines a reckless and unscrupulous opportunist, yet remains deeply attractive in the public eye.

Released in 2017, Barry Seal: American Traffic thus offers Tom Cruise a tailored anti-hero role in a humorous eighties atmosphere.
