The editorial staff of Vogue Magazine in the Philippines has chosen Apo Whang-Od, a 106-year-old indigenous tattoo artist, to grace the cover of the latest issue. She, considered the oldest tattoo artist in the world, also became the oldest woman to star on the cover of the famous fashion magazine.

Apo Whang-Od, also known as Maria Oggay, lives in a mountainous area of ​​the Philippines called Buscalan. She learned and started practicing the craft on locals and tourists alike when she was still a teenager.

Today, Apo Whang-Od is regarded among the locals as a “mambabatok”, i.e. an elderly woman who specializes in the art called “batok”, i.e. traditional tattoo making, originally from the Philippines.

“Apo Maria “Whang-Od” Oggay embodies the strength and beauty of the Filipino spirit. Hailed as the last mambabatok of her generation, she imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe, signifying strength, courage and beauty, on the skin of thousands of people people who made the pilgrimage to Buscalan”says the report.

Also for the magazine, the 106-year-old lady said she will continue until her eyes allow her to see. “Why not keep tattooing until I can see? And I only stop when I can’t see anymore. Until then, I will continue to leave Buscalan marks, Kalinga marks on people”he said.
