The government says betting sites can make up to R$15 billion in taxes

Fazer’s minister Fernando Haddad said online betting sites would be taxed by the federal taxman.

This Tuesday (4), Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that online betting sites will be taxed by the Federal Revenue Service. According to the minister, the forecast is that amounts between R $ 12 billion and R $ 15 billion will be raised, compared to the R $ 6 billion value previously announced in an interview with GloboNews.

In his speech, Haddad says it is not right not to tax an activity that “many people don’t even agree exists in Brazil”. He also says that since the sites are on the Internet, it is up to the federal agency to collect the taxes. “If it is a reality of the virtual world, nothing more fair than taxing the Revenue Agency”.

Online sports betting sites and applications continue to grow strongly in Brazil, where the “betting” market has already been legalized, but continues without regulation of activities. Taxes would be collected through one tax on corporate earnings and another on player earnings. The government would still require licenses where a company would have to pay a specific amount to operate.

Businesses in the sector welcome the taxation, as long as the government regulates activities and measures accompany increased vigilance against betting manipulation. An estimate by the BNL Data portal, specialized in the gaming market, reveals that the segment is expected to earn 12 billion reais in 2023, an increase of 71% compared to 2020 earnings.

Increased collection

The Ministry of Agriculture is working to increase revenue collection in the country through taxes, by inspecting existing ones or creating new ones. Last Monday (3), the minister announced that around R$ 150 billion could be raised only by “making those who don’t pay pay” until the end of the year. When asked if he was referring to Chinese e-commerce, for example Shein and AliExpressHaddad did not name the companies.
