we have heard Shrek reboot since at least 2018, when Illumination chief Chris Meledandri hinted at the idea of a new twist on the DreamWorks Animation franchise. Now, after the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (who, spoiler alert, hinted at a return to Shrek-y territory at the end) Meledandri is still weighing us in, getting to the point where he says he wants the original cast back.
interviewed by Variety AS Super Mario Bros. hits theaters, Meledandri has brought the venerable franchise back to life.
“It’s not that different from the process we’ve been through Mario, where you observe what are the central elements that have enchanted them to the public, and it is better that you can honor these central elements,” he says. “Y luego estás trabajando hard para construir elements de la historia y nuevos personajes que t lleven a nuevo places. The original cast is a big part of it. This, of course, refers to Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.
“We anticipate the return of the cast,” he continues. “Talks are starting now and every indication we have is that there is tremendous excitement from the cast to return.”
So yeah, Smash Mouth may be teasing new copyright checks soon, and a new movie may be more about when, not if.
