Russell Crowe premieres ‘The Exorcist of the Pope’, a rare avis in his filmography, in which he has avoided horror movies for a very simple reason: he doesn’t like it.
Believe it or not, after more than three decades of career, Russell Crowe has never starred in a horror movie…until now. “Well, I did ‘The Mummy’ with Tom Cruise a few years ago, and it had some horror movie aspects,” recalls the actor in an interview with PHOTOS. “And there’s another horror project that I’ve recently finished called ‘The Georgetown Project,’ but yeah, I guess this is the first pure horror movie that I’ve starred in,” Crowe confirms of his new work, ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’, which can be seen in Spanish cinemas from April 5.
Winner of an Oscar for ‘Gladiator’ and Hollywood icon with films like ‘A Beautiful Mind’, ‘LA Confidential’ or ‘Master and Commander’, it is hard to believe that there is a genre that Crowe has not yet explored. Why has Russell Crowe never starred in a horror movie before? The answer may be easier than it seems: simply because you don’t like them..
“I do not like horror movies”says the actor in our interview (You can see the full video with their statements at the beginning of this article) after asking him about this unexplored space in his extensive and excellent career. “I don’t like them… They stay with me for too long, so I’m not in the habit of seeing them,” she adds.
No, Crowe is not a big fan of the genre, and perhaps for that reason he has preferred to avoid it throughout his acting career. Even so, as he points out, ‘The Mummy’ can be considered his first adventure in a film with horror aspects, and he has a project pending release that deals squarely with the subject in a very metanarrative way: in ‘The Georgetown Project’, Russell Crowe plays an actor who begins to break down while filming a horror movie.
It seems that the actor is getting a taste for scares, but he wants to clarify that ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ is much more than just an exorcism movie that adheres to the tradition of the genre. “There’s a lot more to this movie than just the horror film aspects: there’s a lot of humour, there’s some historical detail, it’s got a little bit of ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ a little bit of ‘Indiana Jones,’ a little bit of James Bond. .. There’s a lot in this movie”Explain.
Directed by Julius Avery (‘Overlord’), ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ recovers the real figure of Father Gabriele Amorth, who was the Vatican’s chief exorcist for more than three decades, in which he performed more than one hundred thousand exorcisms. Amorth’s memoirs are expanded through the various books he wrote during his lifetime, and from which this film is inspired. In her, the exorcist will have to face one of the most powerful demons he has ever seen, and that is in the body of a little boy.
