Cinema is crazy about surprising endings and clever twists that leave the audience shocked, amazed or completely questioning, and the 90s clearly did not escape the specialness of this scenario.
One of the most frequently cited examples, and for good reason, is The Sixth Sense, one of director M. Night Shyamalan’s first feature films. A film in which a little boy suffering from inexplicable terrors finally confides in his psychologist that he sees dead people walking around him.
And indeed, the very young patient did not believe it, because at the end of the film we learn that Doctor Crowe (Bruce Willis) is actually dead himself and did not survive the aggression of which he was a victim at the beginning of the war. The film and since then has been unwittingly living as a “ghost”.
Another memorable finale in Bryan Singer’s Usual Suspects, with an interrogation scene between Agent Dave Kwan and Roger Kint, known as “The Verbal,” in the context of a case involving a massacre on a freighter from which only two people escaped.
