Santos guarantees more than R$ 500 thousand with the victory in the debut of the Sudamericana

Santos beat Blooming 1-0 in the first round of the 2023 Sudamericana group stage on Tuesday. As well as starting the competition with three points, Peixe also secured extra cash with a triumph in Bolivia.

Alvinegro Praiano pocketed 100,000 US dollars, or around R$ 507,000 at current exchange rates. The prize comes from Conmebol, which will award a cash prize for each match won in the group stage of this year’s continental tournament.

The measure aims to encourage all clubs to continue fighting and playing good games until the end of their season in the first stage of these competitions, regardless of their position in the table or their ability to qualify for the knockout stage.

The overall prize pool will also be higher in 2023. The competition will see a 30% increase over last season. In 2023, US$77.8 million, approximately R$410 million, will be distributed in prizes.

With the result, Santos is in second place in group E, with the same three points as Newell’s Old Boys-ARG, who beat Audax Italiano-CHI to take the lead. The Bolivians, in turn, are third, at zero.

Peixe now turns his attention to the Copa do Brasil. Next Tuesday, at 19 (Brasilia time), the club will visit Botafogo-SP, for the first leg of the third phase of the tournament.

Peixe’s next match in the Sul-Americana is scheduled for April 20, at 7 pm, against Audax Italiano, in Vila Belmiro.
