Discovered thanks to the TV series Clair de lune (1985 – 1989), Bruce Willis wasted no time in playing his most famous role: that of John McClane, a hotshot cop from the Piege de Cristal. A bona fide hit, the film catapulted him to international stardom and an iconic figure in action cinema.
Meanwhile, after a flop at the box office, Richard Gere breathed new life into his career thanks to the huge success of Pretty Woman. Since then, he has alternated between romantic comedies (Just Married (or Almost), Autumn in New York) and thrillers (Hot-Blooded for Cold-Blooded Murder, Primal Fear).
In 1997, Michael Caton-Jones, an up-and-coming filmmaker, called the two actors for The Jackal – an adaptation of Frederic Forsyth’s novel of the same name, which had already been brought to the screen in 1973 by Fred Zinnemann.
Initially, the director offers the title role to Richard Gere, and Bruce Willis is expected to play the role of Declan Mulqueen, who is responsible for his search. In the end, his choice backfires, allowing Bruce Willis to shine as a ruthless and unapproachable killer. Series B typical of the 1990s, Jackal This is especially true of the duel between two actors at the peak of their careers.
