Super Mario Bros: Mario has the same French voice as a Marvel hero, but which one?

Super Mario Bros, The Movie hits our darkrooms this Wednesday, April 5th. Adapted from Nintendo video games, the feature film tells the story of two plumber brothers, Mario and Luigi. When they attempt to repair an underground pipe, they find themselves plunged into a magical new world through a mysterious pipe. But when the two brothers are separated, Mario embarks on a wild adventure to find Luigi.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film is voiced in the original version by “talented stars”, actors who do not specialize in dubbing. Thus, Chris Pratt voices Mario, Charlie Day is Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Kay voices Toad, Jack Black is Bowser, and Seth Rogen is Donkey Kong.

When the first trailer was released in October 2022, American audiences were highly critical of the voice choices, including the decision to hire Chris Pratt to voice the Italian plumber. Fans have criticized the lack of vocal similarity between the actor voiced by American comedian Charles Martinet and the game’s protagonist.

But Chris Pratt and Chris Meledandri, head of Illumination, quickly spoke and explained that they wanted to bring something new.

The Guardians of the Galaxy actor said: “I’m doing a voice for an animated, updated character, and it’s something you’ve never heard before in the Mario universe.”

A statement that was criticized by English-speaking netizens after they only heard the voice of… Chris Pratt.

Since then, viewers have turned to foreign trailers for comparison, and the French version blew them away. So much so that some American internet users even announced that they would watch the movie in French!

Usually, Universal France and Illumination also call on actors known to the general public to double the animated characters to ensure the promotion of the feature film. But given the unexpected success of the French commercials, it was decided to entrust the dubbing of the film to real dubbing actors.

Thus, Pierre Tessier voices Mario in the French version. The 54-year-old actor is the regular French voice of Ryan Reynolds, Greg Grunberg, Greg German and also dubs Billy Zane (especially in Titanic), Chris O’Donnell or even Justin Long.

Benoit Du Pac doubled Luigi. It is a logical choice because it is the official voice Charlie’s day who voices Mario’s cowardly brother in the original version. The actor also voices Dom Hall Gleeson and Chris Wilde.
