The Pope’s Via Crucis at the Colosseum to highlight the ‘wars of the world’

Refugees in conflict will carry the cross of the procession

The Via Crucis presided over by Pope Francis, in procession to the Colosseum in Rome, will have wars in the world and the call for peace as its main theme, according to sources linked to the Vatican this Friday (7).

Refugees fleeing various ongoing conflicts, from Ukraine to Nigeria, from Iraq to South Sudan, from Syria to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were selected to carry the cross between stations. Their choice reinforces one of the themes most debated by the Pope in his messages and in his celebrations, the so-called “piecemeal third world war”.

The official meditations for each of the stations will be announced shortly before the start of the procession, which will begin at 21:15 (16:15 GMT). However, the same sources report that the current socio-political tensions in the Middle East and in the Balkan area can also be mentioned.

Organizations that help migrants living in Italy would also be involved to help organize the Via Crucis. In the case of Ukraine, the Greek-Catholic Church of Santa Sofia, in Rome, which has been providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees in the country since the beginning of the war in February last year, would have contributed, in addition to the good performance of the Pope’s alms office, headed by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski.
