You play as Roxanne Ascher, the new recurring character in the HPI 2 season. Were you cast in the role or did you go through castings?
Clotilda Hesme: Yes, I did a few essays for the series with the director of the first two episodes, Mona Achache, and these essays were then watched by everyone. This allows you to introduce yourself to all the directors you will be working with later. It was a wonderful chance to work with a slave and I prefer to take exams in general, it is more reassuring for everyone and we know what to expect!
Did you watch the first season before the audience?
I have not seen all the episodes, but I watched yes, on the advice of my nephews, who are absolutely adoring. It is wonderful to have such a TV series in France, where the heroine is funny, smart and beautiful. It is rare to have a leading character who has all these skills. ᲓaThe dialogues are very well written and pace! I was very happy to be asked to be a part of it.
How would you characterize Roxanne, an investigator from IGPN who will come and place his grains of sand between Karadek (Mehdi Nebibu) and Morgan (Audrey Flerot)?
He does not hesitate to change his face during the interrogation to trap the suspects, but that is part of his job andHe does not do it with bad intentions. She is a very professional woman, very strict and who does not only make friends in her profession. He does the work that is necessary for the functioning of the police and is not lacking in the level of IQ.
Then he has no weapons at all like Morgan Alvaro’s character! We are on the exact opposite side of femininity, much tougher – even a little psychic. But it applies because there is also something vulnerable that will be revealed over time, especially since Caradets does not remain insensitive to its charm. I think these two are a bit similar to each other.
The wonderful thing about her relationship with Morgan is that there is no rivalry between women in the first degree. Today we no longer want to show women who are opposed to each other by men. There is no rivalry because they do not fight in one category. Even there are scenes where we rejoice A bit west side in the first episodes, this is seen in Morgan’s imagination. We play with codes.
How did you compose this character? We know very little about him when he first appeared …
Roxanne is a man who with his little attention manages to charm the whole DIPJ, he becomes an ideal girlfriend … I never dare to criticize such people and it’s very annoying for Morgan! (Laughs) We had the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding” about him, where we do not want to like Cameron Diaz’s character in the same way. And then we realize that this is a good friend and that eventually the story does not happen there.
I tell myself that Roxane has built up all her self-confidence through hard work. She is a woman who completely sacrifices her life for her profession and the meeting with Karadec destabilizes her. We suddenly see in him a certain sweetness, even an awkwardness. It is not this type of mistress-wife who knows how to flirt: she takes the lead, but because she is direct and sincere, and it also destabilizes Karadetsi.
He’s not at all extroverted like Morgan, he has some shy, slightly weird sides, which is fun. There is a growing contrast between the two women, which is obvious, but it is in the sentimental and affective realm that Roxanne reveals herself.
Without revealing anything about the outcome of Season 2, is Roxanne going to continue in the series?
I have not seen the end of the second season, so I can not tell you anything about it! It is being written and developed now, so I have no idea. For now we will introduce this character to the public and then see what happens.
I have always wanted to do demanding things that are also popular and here at HPI we serve!
This is the first time you have seen it in a detective comedy, but also in a procedural series. After your role in the TV series Arte Nona and her daughters, did you want HPI but also Lupine on Netflix, do you want to open more genres, more formats?
No, I never chose the pitch. For example, when I did Amour Fou for Arte with Jeremy Rainier, it was a genre series, A very joyful thriller with the character of this psychopathic doctor. I do not feel locked in this or that genre.
Of course, with today’s TV series, it allows us to develop characters much longer in length. I’m working on a series for TF1 for the first time, it’s a course and I’m glad because when there is a series of this quality, I do not want to give up at all. I have always wanted to do demanding things that are also popular and here at HPI we serve!
What do you think explains the success of the series?
There really is something new and unheard of in this female character that Audrey Fleur skillfully carries. He is absolutely brilliant, I do not know how he manages to remember everything he has to remember, to constantly improvise … he shows ingenuity and good humor on the set, which is really awesome. It is typical for theater actors, Marie Denarno, Bruno Sanchez … There is something extremely elaborate and light in their acting at the same time.
What are your next projects?
I played in a play, Horseman, Which we plan to take to Canada and New York at the beginning of the school year after 130 dates in France, for which we are nominated for Moliere. I have too Christoph Charie’s single, Le Patient, which will be released in the fall, was filmed for Arte and Netflix.
