Almost all tattoo studios opened in 2022 are MEI

A survey by Sebrae shows that 6,763 tattoo and body piercing studios were set up in the country in the past

The legal figure of the Individual Microentrepreneur (MEI) has been the main path chosen by tattoo and body piercing professionals who wish to open their own studio and act formally. A survey carried out by Sebrae on the basis of data from the National Register of Economic Activities (CNAE) shows that 97% of businesses opened in 2022 in this segment fall into the MEI category.

Last year, 6,763 small businesses specializing in piercing and tattooing were created in the country. Of this total, 6,544 were individual micro-entrepreneurs, according to the Sebrae survey.

Again according to CNAE data, 3.6 million new businesses were opened in Brazil in 2022. Of this universe, 78% were MEI. This number shows the representativeness of this business model among tattoo and piercing studios.

The number of tattoo parlors has grown over the past 3 years

The number of new tattoo and piercing studios grew by 35% between 2019 and 2022. Even with the pandemic, the segment has jumped from 5,006 new businesses (in 2019) to 5,604 (in 2020), with significant growth in 2021, when 6,740 new businesses were created.

The states that concentrated the largest volume of new businesses opened in this segment in 2022 were São Paulo (2,219), Minas Gerais (747) and Rio de Janeiro (650). The number of individual micro-entrepreneurs opened in São Paulo as tattoo studios is eye-catching, exceeding the total number of businesses opened in this segment in 2021 (adding MEIs, micro- and small businesses), with a total of 2,050 small businesses.
