If you’re a fan of Harlan Coben – be it his books or TV series – then don’t miss Lazarus on Prime Video. For the first time in his television career, the American author turns to writing and does not adapt one of his thrillers.
Lazarus follows Joel Lazarus, a man haunted by strange visions he can’t explain after his father’s death. As a series of unsolved murders resurface, he realizes that these events may be connected to his family’s tragic past – and in particular to the brutal murder of his sister twenty-five years ago.
True to himself, Cobain delivers a gripping thriller where trauma and family secrets intertwine. And in the last episode, which I will explain here, he offers us all the answers to our questions (or almost). But the final scene, which sees the character, played by Sam Claflin, his murderous son, could open the door for a season 2. The showrunner was asked a question, here’s what he says.
Koben’s method
in the given interview We weeklyHarlan Coben raises the hopes of fans who are eagerly waiting for the second season of Lazarus:
“Every question we asked in episode one is answered in episode six. It’s over. Will there be a season two? I don’t know.”
You should know one thing about Harlan Coben: the author has always aimed to create only mini-series, and this is especially true for Netflix, with which he has created about ten adaptations. He does not want to disappoint the audience and offers what they expect: a story with a beginning and an end. And this is exactly what he planned with Lazarus:
“I’ve never done a season 2, but I’ve been offered it in the past. We left a little door open to have a little fun with you guys at the end. But it’s not really set in stone, it’s more of an opening.”
In other words, the thriller can end there without disappointing the audience (even if we admit, this ending is quite disturbing), but there is another element to consider. If Cobain is used to rejecting Netflix, with whom he has worked for years, we do not know very well the terms of his contract with Prime Video. As a reminder, two years ago the platform launched Discovered (on Miki Bolitar), a fantastic suspense series, which was canceled after 1 season. Implied: Season 2 was well planned.
So the door to Lazarus remains open even if we don’t really believe it. Even if Prime Video doesn’t divulge its numbers, the series doesn’t seem to be a huge success worldwide and is even getting pretty average reviews.
