‘How I met your father’: Hilary Duff and Sophie’s queer twist that we will see in season 2

What does her future love life hold for Sophie?

How I Met Your Father’ star Hilary Duff has spoken that there could be more twists and turns for her character, Sophie, in the second season of the sitcom. The series, which is a spin-off of the long-running sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’, introduces us to hopeless romantic Sophie as she navigates her life in New York and tries to find true love.

Meanwhile, an older version of Sophie (Kim Cattrall) tells her son a story about how she met his father, whose identity is expected to be revealed later in the series.

In season one, there’s an obvious connection between Sophie and aspiring musician, Jesse (Chris Lowell), but of course that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll end up being the titular father. Talking with DigitalSpyHilary Duff revealed that she likes the fact that the door is still open on who the mystery dad could be.

I think anyone can be the chosen one. Every time I describe it, I say, we’re not ‘The Bachelor’ because we’re not. But I think there’s always some kind of opportunity or need to leave a door open without seeming like you’re overstepping the bounds. I think the writers will have to continue to guide Sophie in the right direction. It’s not like she’s always going to make perfect decisions, because obviously we want this to reflect real life experiences where people obviously make mistakes and stuff.

The star, who rose to fame as a teenager playing the title role in ‘Lizzie McGuire’, suggested Sophie doesn’t need to be gender-restricted when it comes to finding true love: “I’d like to see Sophie paired up with sister Jesse’s adoptive daughter, Ellen (Tien Tran)”.

“I think his journey is, you know, the opportunity is wide open with a lot of the cast,” he explained. “Ellen is the father. Ellen has a rose ceremony…that would be awesome.” His co-star Lowell interrupts with a “You just dropped it all!” – but whether Sophie could end up with Ellen, Jesse, or either of them remains to be seen.

‘How I met your father’ already has its first full season on Disney + Spain.
