Not even the ‘fright’ of Renato Augusto makes Corinthians move for reinforcements

The Corinthian board sees no options to like in the domestic market, which is only possible for transfers at the moment

Corinthians risk losing midfielder Renato Augusto, their main player, up to three months, due to a possible meniscus injury in his right knee. Even so, the club’s management are not expected to go to the transfer market for incumbent reinforcements.

Finding an alternative to the number 8 shirt was one of Corinthians’ goals on the transfer market at the start of the year, but the Alvinegro club couldn’t find someone who had the requirements within a cost-benefit ratio deemed interesting by the team, which, therefore, chose to use the options already in the list.

At the moment, Timão is not dealing with any athlete and this should remain regardless of the outcome of the imaging tests that Renato will perform this Saturday (8).

With the signing window for players outside Brazil having closed on Tuesday (4), the only option would be for Coringão to look for parts within the local scene. However, the diagnosis made by the Corinthian football department in relation to the Brazilian scenario is not encouraging. The club sees no options that have technical characteristics or that perform different functions than the athletes who are already in the squad.

THE DRAMA OF RENATO AUGUSTO

The midfielder, who had already suffered a right knee strain earlier last month, in a match against Santo André, for Paulistão, fell on the grass of the Centenario stadium, in Montevideo, Uruguay, in the 13th minute of the match against Liverpool, on the debut of Corinthians in the Libertadores, last Thursday (7). In an argument over the ball, Renato planted his leg forcefully on the ground and immediately collapsed throwing punches on the pitch and crying when he was replaced.

The first clinical tests carried out in the Centenário dressing room were encouraging, as they practically ruled out the possibility of a ligament rupture, which would have fatally put him out of action in six to nine months. However, the suspect is a meniscus tear. If there is a need for repairs to the region, the average time the player will possibly be away from the meadows is three months. There is also the possibility that the problem can be fixed with arthroscopy. In that case, Renato Augusto would be “in sauce” for between three and six weeks.

Against Liverpool, Maycon was selected to take over the number 8 shirt. In the Paulistão quarter-final match against Ituano on 12 March, manager Fernando Lázaro selected Paulinho. Both did not adjust well to the role. In addition to the two athletes, Adson, Chrystian, Barletta and Pedro can also replace Renato Augusto in the Corinthians squad. The last two, however, would change the style of play, which would begin to be more about speed on the sides than cadence in the center.
