Deforestation in the Amazon is the second worst quarter since 2016


March is among the worst results in the historical series

The deforestation alarms in the Legal Amazon reached an area of ​​356 square kilometers in March, the third worst result of the historical series that began in 2016, informs the Deter system of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

As a result, the first quarter of 2023 saw a high number of destructions, ranking it second worst performer. A total of 844.7 km² was deforested between January and March of this year.

The legal Amazon corresponds to almost 60% of the Brazilian territory, including eight states (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins), as well as part of the state of Maranhão.

INPE’s real-time system identifies deforested areas of more than 0.03 km² and, while it is not the system that provides official data on destruction, it is used to monitor the current situation in the Amazon. .
