It has become a rule, with very few exceptions, that a film that is very successful at the box office will have a good chance of spawning one or more sequels. There is no shortage of examples, and you only have to look at the ranking of the best works made in France in 2022 to see that nine of the top ten films are sequels to Avatar: The Way of the Water, Top Gun: Maverick and The Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru.
If we could already experience this phenomenon in the 1970s with Planet of the Apes released in 1968 and its four sequels that appeared in the following decade, or even after The Godfather II, which followed the first Franciscan film out of the box. Ford Coppola, especially in the 1980s, later films became a real social phenomenon.
Since 1980, the Star Wars saga that began in 1977 with A New Hope has set the stage for the first sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. This was just the beginning of a concept that was to enjoy great success during this decade with sagas such as Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Lethal Weapon or Mad Max.
The horror genre is not immune to this new trend, with many gruesome characters constantly returning to commit new and bloody murders. This happy family could include Jason from Friday the 13th, Michael Myers from the Halloween saga, or even Freddy Krueger, a bogeyman born from Wes Craven’s imagination.
Today we will play not the sequels of the 80s, but the introduction to the films of that decade. Can you spot these seven movies from the first shot?
