Tarantino recalls DiCaprio’s ‘insane’ ad-lib scene in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood

Launched over three years ago, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (2019) still yields subjects, shall we say, unpublished. One of the film’s most memorable scenes is an outbreak of Rick Daltonplayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, when he arrives at the trailer and loses the line for not being able to act properly. The film’s director, Quentin Tarantino recalled an insane improvisation by the actor to film this moment.

During podcast interview 2 Bears, 1 Cavefeatured on the channel YMH Studios at the YouTubeTarantino revealed how the hilarious breakdown of DiCaprio in the fictional western it was always intended to be completely improvised by the star.

“I knew I wanted to have that scene, but I didn’t want to write it. I didn’t want it to be a dialogue, for him to memorize,” said the filmmaker in the conversation. “So I called Leo and said, ‘Look, here’s what I want to do: I want you to come in after you’ve fucked up on set without knowing your lines, and I want you to come in the trailer and be all mad at yourself, a complete tantrum. Just a gigantic pity party where you just lose your mind, but against yourself, nobody else. And I want it to have the randomness of an improvisation, just come out of you.'”

Now what I did though is I gave him different subjects that he could complain about. ‘Here’s one subject, here’s another, here’s something you could say.’ And he said, ‘Great.’ He was a little nervous.

“It was actually really sweet that he was nervous that day because it’s his fault and he knows it. So we’re shooting this scene and I’m right next to the camera and we just do a few different takes and it’s great,” he continued. Quentin Tarantino. “And then, every now and then, if I thought he was short of something, I might throw something in his direction.”
