Box Office: Mario Takes Frozen Record!

It’s official: Super Mario Bros, the movie is a box office sensation! In the US, the feature film grossed a staggering $146.36 million in its opening weekend and a record $204.6 million in its first five days. , as reported by Deadline and ComingSoon.

Internationally, it also achieved the best opening for an animated film with $377 million, breaking the record held by Frozen 2 ($358.5 million) in 2019.

The Imax format represents 15% of Mario’s gross, or a global total of $21.6 million: it’s also the highest opening in animated film history.

At home, an animated film released last Wednesday had the best start of 2023 — if you only count films that didn’t add a preview on their first day. It thus topped the box office on its opening day with a total of 281,442 releases, beating out The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, which also opened that day. By comparison, it’s doing better than Sonic 2, which sold a total of 155,635 tickets when it was released in March 2022.

In the U.S., Super Mario Bros. can boast that it has outsold blockbusters like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves (which comes out here on April 12) or even John Wick: Chapter 4, which is placed in the second tier. Podium with an additional $14.6 million for a total of $147 million after three weeks of operation. Action movie with Keanu Reeves also breaks records: own! It’s actually $25 million short of Chapter 3’s domestic total ($171 million) and about $60 million short of surpassing its worldwide total ($327 million).
