Horror movies based on true events are a favorite of many viewers, especially if they are set in a church because they usually tell a plot related to exorcisms.
Exactly the tape “The Pope’s Exorcist” (“The Pope’s Exorcist” in Spanish) mixes all these elements, as it is inspired by the real records of Father Gabriele Amorth, who was the main exorcist of the Vatican from 1986 to 2016. Keep reading to learn more about this personality.
Gabriele Amorth was ordained a priest at the age of 29 and did not plan to become an exorcist
The famous exorcist was born on May 1, 1925 in Modena, Italy and had a normal childhood playing sports such as basketball or fencing. He attended school and graduated in Law and Journalism to later become a supporter of the Cristinano Democratic Party.
But this step into politics was short-lived, as his religious inclination led him to be ordained a priest in 1954, aged 29. For a little more than three decades, Gabriele Amorth exercised the ecclesiastical work of a common father.
It was one morning in 1986, in the middle of an informal conversation, that Cardinal Ugo Poletti ordered Gabriele to become assistant to Cándido Amantini, the Vatican’s chief exorcist at the time.
Father Gabriele Amorth performed more than 70,000 exorcisms
With his new position, the Italian father learned all he could from Cándido Amantini and memorized the 21 rules of the rite of exorcism, “Rituale Romanum”, written by Pope Paul V in 1614. It was so that on February 21, 1987 Gabriele Amorth performed her first exorcism on a 25-year-old farmer.
In 1992, Gabriele became the Vatican’s chief exorcist after the death of Cándido Amantini, and several of the cases he attended, more than 70,000 in his lifetime, were published in books. There were a total of 21 volumes, published between 1993 and 2019, which are not part of the official documents of the Catholic Church, but contain the father’s personal experiences.
In the last years of her life, Gabriele Amorth performed five exorcisms a day.
Gabriele Amorth founded the International Association of Exorcists in 1990 and was its president until 2000, when he retired at the age of 75. Of course, this was not the end of his career as an exorcist, as he was named the club’s honorary president for life.
Before that, the father dealt with 10-15 possible possession cases a day, just by looking at the people, he could tell who needed his help or who had mental problems and refer them to a psychiatrist. In the last years of his life he was limited to five occasions a day.
Father Gabriele Amorth died on September 16, 2016 at the age of 91 and is buried in the Laurentino Cemetery in Rome, Italy. What did you think of the story of this famous exorcist?
