Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin will direct a new version of ‘Dracula’s Daughter’ and continue working on the remake of ‘1997: Rescue in New York’
The success of ‘Scream VI’, the best premiere of the entire saga created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, makes ‘Scream 7’ practically inevitable. However, while between ‘Scream 5’ and ‘Scream 6’ barely a year passed, the seventh installment of the franchise seems to have to wait… Or change its directors.
Radio Silence, the team of filmmakers responsible for the last two horror films in the ‘Scream’ saga, have joined a new project starring Universal’s Monsters, specifically ‘Dracula’s daughter’. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct ‘Dracula’s Daughter,’ while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, will produce.. Stephen Shields (‘The Woods’) wrote the initial script and Guy Busick (who co-wrote the last two ‘Scream’ movies with James Vanderbilt) has since done some revisions.
According to The Hollywood Reporterthe project will focus on a gang of kidnappers who kidnap some young people, one of whom ends up being the very daughter of Dracula.
It is not clear if the story will have anything to do with ‘Renfield’, the film in which Nicolas Cage takes over from Bela Lugosi, but it will be part of the “update” of the Monsters of Universal that are forming the reboots of, for example, ‘The invisible man’ by Leigh Whannell.
The 1936 original film ‘Dracula’s Daughter’ directed by Lambert Hillyer, told the story of Countess Marya Zaleska (Gloria Holden), the daughter of Count Dracula and, of course, a vampire. After Dracula’s death, she believes that by destroying her body she will free herself from his influence and live normally. When that fails, she turns to a psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Garth (Otto Kruger), but he’s less than willing to help. Marya kidnaps Dr. Garth’s assistant Janet (Marguerite Churchill) and takes her to Transylvania, leading to a battle between Dr. Garth and the Countess for poor Janet’s life.
The trio of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella is also preparing the “requel” of ‘1997: Rescue in New York’the action classic directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell in 1981.
