‘Star Wars’: who was the first Jedi and everything known about the origin of the Force

During Star Wars Celebration in April 2023 it was announced that director James Mangold (“Logan” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) will be in charge of a new Star Wars film about the origins of the Force.

Mangold’s film will be titled “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi” and according to the director, it will be a kind of “biblical” story that will explain the birth of the Jedi Order some 25,000 years in the past.

However, already within Disney canon and Legendary material, details about the identity of the First Jedi in galactic history have been explored and revealed.

“Star Wars”: who was the first Jedi in history

Aside from Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey in “Star Wars,” something that has intrigued fans is James Mangold’s work on the origins of the Jedi, as the history of the religion and the Order has not been widely explored on screen.

As seen in the movies, the Jedi defended the galaxy for thousands of years from their massive temple on the planet Coruscant, until the events of Order 66 and the birth of the Empire, where all Jedi were hunted down.

However, long before all this, the Jedi built hundreds of temples across the galaxy to explore the Force and pass on its knowledge for millennia. The first of these temples is located on the planet Ahch-To.

In “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” when Rey meets an old Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) she discovers that he was exiled in the ruins of what was the first Jedi temple.

In this place you can see a two-color mural (similar to a yin yang) on the floor with a figure of a mysterious person, meditating, with a lightsaber and a pair of orbs floating on his shoulders.

Pablo Hidalgo’s book on the art of the film (‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary’ from 2015) explains that this figure maintained a balance in the Force, without being a total user of the Light or Side. Darkness.

In the same way, the one known as the First Jedi would be responsible for maintaining balance in the Force, founded the Order to protect the galaxy and invented lightsabers using kyber crystals and their connection to the Force.

As explained in the animated series “Star Wars Clone Wars”, where the physical manifestations of the Force appear as The Father, The Son (the Dark Side) and The Daughter (The Light), these beings are part of a cosmic balance.

Also in the animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ appears a creature that appears to be thousands of years old and is a Force user, called Bendu representing the center between the Light and the Dark Side.

However, it is currently unknown who was the first to use the Force, discover midichlorians, or was the first manifestation of the Force in the Star Wars galaxy.

The origin of the Jedi in the Star Wars legends

On the other hand, in the stories that are no longer part of the Star Wars canon after Disney bought the franchise, it is explained that there were three early Jedi and those who founded the Order.

According to the legends, a religion tried to maintain the balance between the Light and the Dark Side, but when they split into two groups, the Jedi were created, who were responsible for preserving the Light.

In the video game ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’ it is explained that the founders of the Jedi Order were Cala Brin, Garon Jard, Ters Sedon and Rajivari and their first temple was erected on the planet Tython.

It’s a mystery whether James Mangold will draw inspiration from the legends or create an original story of the First Jedi, so we’ll have to wait for more information on his “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi” movie.
