70 years of James Bond: the 5 best 007 films

70 years of James Bond: the 5 best 007 films

First of all, I have to point out that this list was made from the heart. Therefore, it can generate some discontent. Let me explain: I’m a big fan of 007 and I certainly let my emotional memory speak louder when I write this ranking. It’s important to note that the 70th anniversary is of the novel, not the film. On April 13, 1953 Ian Fleming released Casino Royale. The first film production is The satanic Dr. Alsince 1962.

Without further ado, let’s get to the top!

5th – Golden Eye (1995)

I confess that I held back so as not to put GoldenEye in an even better position. For anyone born in the 90s, Pierce Brosnan is the “face” of James Bond. Furthermore, the film was instrumental in raising the bar for the franchise once again. Pierce Brosnan mixed the charm of Roger Moore with the seriousness of Sean Connery and proved he could be a true secret agent. It is worth mentioning that this was the first 007 after Timothy Dalton’s two films, which are not among the most memorable for fans. And above all: GoldenEye gave birth to the Nintendo 64 game, which revolutionized games of this type and marked the childhood of many people – like that of this journalist writing to you.

4th – Casino Royale (2006)

Personally, I consider Pierce Brosnan’s debut as 007 better than Daniel Craig’s. But the most recent James Bond saga was very well designed: it had a beginning, a middle and an end (and what an end!). And the beginning of everything was very important to relaunch the franchise with a more modern air. Craig played an inexperienced 007, cooler, more passionate and less strategic. I consider it a film worthy of a 4th place because it would please even those who have never seen a 007: it has action, cars, romance and great tension in the game of poker. It’s a complete script!

3rd – The satanic Doctor No (1962)

good, without The satanic Dr No, we wouldn’t even be in this discussion. In terms of success and box office, the sequels were better. But it was Sean Connery’s debut that gave 007 the format that established the franchise. In addition to the right choice for the protagonist, there are other important elements that have marked the saga: technology, humour, the concept of “Slave Girl”, heavenly places and an emblematic villain. I underline the importance of Dr No himself as a villain, a megalomaniac who has chosen a beautiful island to think about his satanic plans. The meeting of the secret agent with the iconic Bond girl Honey Ryder also marks the first ever 007. This formula made James Bond what we know today.

2nd – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Maybe you ask yourself: “what? The only George Lazenby film on the list? So it is. He is perhaps the least memorable actor in the series. But this is, without a doubt, one of the most important films in the franchise. If you’ve never seen it and don’t want spoilers, stop here! We know that James Bond is usually not very emotionally involved. In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, however, that changes and the result echoes throughout the sequence. Bond falls in love with and marries his only love (at least until Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale): the Countess Teresa di Vicenzo, Tracy. And, shortly after the party, Tracy is killed in an action orchestrated by the great villain of the story, Ernst Blofeld, leader of SPECTRE.

1st – Golden Finger (1964)

The third film in the series was once again brilliantly experienced by Sean Connery. I think that, at least in this top position, there is more consensus. For a change, we have 007’s recipe for success plus the elements that lead him to 1st place:

Honorable mention

Possibly, The Rocket of Death (1979) it’s the craziest movie in the series. Taking a spin on the successful Star Wars (1977), they decided to take James Bond into space! Roger Moore’s “joke” era was portrayed very well in this script. In addition to the space battle, we have the charismatic Jaws, a character with steel teeth. First, he takes on James Bond on the cable car in Rio de Janeiro (awesome!!). Afterwards, the giant decides to go well in a redemption arc. The film also features the villain Hugo Drax, who is totally insane and wants to decimate life on Earth. The rocket of death it also inspired the stage Aztec from Ninetendo 64 GoldenEye game, which is sensational!
