While out-of-competition selection does not allow films to compete for the Palme d’Or, it is still prestigious. This parallel section is primarily an opportunity to display spectacular works for a wider audience. Not surprisingly, the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival continues the tradition.
First of all, make way for the return of Indiana Jones! Fifteen years after the release of Steven Spielberg’s fourth film, Harrison Ford returns to the Croisette for this new sequel, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fortune. Exit Spielberg, James Mangold (Logan, Le Mans 66) is in charge.
On May 18, two days after the start of the festival, the film will also pay tribute to the 80-year-old American actor. You will have to wait until June 28 for the national cinema release.
Another event, Martin Scorsese’s new film, Killers of Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro and Lily Gladstone, a young Indian actress. With this feature film, “Martin Scorsese continues to visit the history of his country” – explains the general delegate of the festival, Thierry Fremaux.
In addition to the name of the director, this presentation is a real event, because the film was supposed to be released in France on the Apple TV+ platform. Thanks to this selection, Apple and Paramount have teamed up to bring Killers of the Flower Moon to theaters on October 18th.
Also announced on the US side is Sam Levinson’s The Idol. Strange fact: the project is presented as a feature film, when it was first conceived as a TV series. A recent investigation by Rolling Stone revealed the complicated behind-the-scenes of this production. Singer The Weekend and Lily-Rose Depp are starring in the film The Idol, which promises to be a scandalous moment of the festival.
Now we head to South Korea with Cobweb, a film directed by Kim Ji-woon and starring Parasite star Song Kang-ho. The story follows Kim, an obsessive director who, unhappy with the ending of his film, sets out to make it again. “He has two days to make it a masterpiece, but his efforts keep getting thwarted..”
Finally, Maven’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, will open the festival on May 16. At the press conference held on April 13, it is revealed that the feature film is presented without competition. It will sign, among other things, Johnny Depp’s return to the big screen.
Films shown without competition:
- Jeanne du Barry By Maven (Overture)
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny By James Mangold
- Flower Moon Assassins by Martin Scorsese
- an idol By Sam Levinson
- cobweb By Kim Ji-won
That’s not all! In addition to competitive and out-of-competition films, there is also an Un Certain Regard section that highlights emerging filmmakers and original works. The 2023 edition of the festival will present a selection of 17 films. For the first time, Mongolia is represented by the film If Only I Could Winter, but Sudan with Goodbye Julia by Mohamed Kordofan.
This is a French film that will open the Un Certain Regard section on May 16. This is Thomas Keil’s second feature film, Le Règne Animal, starring Romain Duris, Adele Exarchopoulos and Paul Kircher.
