HBO has just released the first official teaser for its upcoming miniseries The Sympathizer, set for release in 2024. Adapted from the novel. Compassionate Written by Vietnamese-American writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the series stars Hoa Quande (Cowboy Bebop) as a North Vietnamese spy who integrates into the refugee community of Los Angeles.
Led by Park Chan-wook (The Old Boy), who is co-showrunner, executive producer, writer and director, The Sympathizer bills itself as “Espionage thriller and cultural satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent exile to the United States“.
Robert Downey Jr., who is an executive producer on the project with his wife Susan Downey, plays several roles in the show. Each of the Old Iron Man characters has a unique look, as seen in the trailer, and is meant to represent different aspects of the American establishment, including an Orange County deputy, a CIA agent, and a Hollywood film director.
The trailer was released at a Warner Bros. press event on Wednesday. Discovery, during which the company also revealed that the HBO Max platform will soon be rebranded simply as Max, in an effort to integrate all of WBD’s brands under one streaming service.
Pending Max’s arrival in France, the HBO series is available on Prime Video with Warner Pass.
