The trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was released last week and created an event. Thus, we discovered that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s feature film included 11 Barbies and 5 Kennys. If every version of the famous Mattel doll has a qualification (lawyer, doctor, journalist…), the Kens are all Kens…
Greta Gerwig and her partner and co-writer Noah Baumbach have written a feminist film in which women are in power and men are just men.
That such a film could be made and released in theaters was a big surprise for its lead actor.
In a promotional video for BAFTA’s page, Margot Robbie, who is also a feature film producer, expressed doubts about the feasibility of such a film when reading the script.

“When I first read the script for Barbie, my reaction was, ‘Ah! very good! What a shame it will never see the light of day because they will never let us make this movie.” But they did !”
Doubts are justified, because the project has been on the table of producers for several years. In 2016, Amy Schumer was announced for the lead role, but the actress and comedian eventually dropped out due to scheduling issues. The following year, Anne Hathaway was considered for the role of Barbie before the latter reverted to Margot Robbie.
Emma Mack, Simu Liu, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Kingsley Ben-Adre
Simu Liu, who plays Ken in the film, adds that after reading Gerwig and Baumbach’s script, his agent told him:If I had to focus my career on one script, it would be Barbie. I really think I should“.
But in order to know exactly what Barbie is saying, we will need to be patient, because so far we only know that the feature film tells the story of a Barbie doll, considered not enough “perfect”, who goes on an adventure in the real world.
In addition to Margot Robbie in the lead role, the film is directed by Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Nkuti Gatwa, Emma Mack, Nicola Coughlan, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adre. and Scott Evans.
Co-produced by Mattel Films, Barbie will hit theaters on July 19, 2023.
