President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Thursday in Shanghai that the New Development Bank (NBD) demonstrates that the union of emerging countries is capable of generating social and economic changes relevant to the world and defended dollar-free transactions in the global trade and in the institution created by the BRICS.
Lula made the comments at a ceremony marking former President Dilma Rousseff’s inauguration at the NBD, created during the PT’s tenure in the Planalto to be a multilateral instrument of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the BRICs .
Lula said that the bank has great potential “to the extent that it frees emerging countries from submission to the traditional financial institutions that intend to govern us”.
Lula defended that the NBD has a currency to finance trade between Brazil and China – the Asian country is Brazil’s main trading partner -, bypassing the use of the dollar.
“Why can’t a bank like the BRICS have a currency that can finance trade relations between Brazil and China, between Brazil and other countries?” Lula said.
Lula’s trip to China will continue until Friday, when he will meet Chinese representative Xi Jimping in Beijing, and aims to oil relations with Brazil’s largest export market and seek new investments after the years of the Jair Bolsonaro government, of distance and attacks on the Asian country.
