The bloc led by Lira becomes decisive in government votes

The new parliamentary block led by Arthur Lira (PP-AL), which brings together nine parties and 173 deputies, conquers a third of the Chamber and will be decisive for important government votes. The União Brasil, PP, PSB, PDT, Avante, Patriota, PSDB, Cidadania and Solidariedade group lead the nucleus with the largest number of MPs, a movement that should also remedy the complaint of parties that have felt prejudiced in their presidential choices of commissions.

The initiative was also a response to the formation of a bloc between the MDB, PSD, Republicans, Podemos and PSC days earlier, bringing together 142 MPs, the second largest. Together, they add up to 315 deputies and make up 61% of the Chamber, which would be enough for the approval of a bill and a proposal to amend the Constitution (PEC).

Isolated, the PL, the main opposition party, with 99 deputies, and the PT-PV-PCdoB federation, with 81 deputies, have lost leadership and deputy leadership in the composition of the Chamber. As shown at column of the EstadãoUntil the last minute, PT chairwoman Gleisi Hoffmann tried to dissuade the centre-left parties, PDT and PSB, from joining her group. However, the two legends had already established a deal with Lira.

For deputy Pompeo de Mattos (Pdt-Rs), the entry of a centre-left party into a block dominated above all by parties closer to the right is not an ideological or electoral factor, but a parliamentary one. The entry of his party, in his analysis, is a matter of survival. “The Chamber has become a block. You’re either in or you’re out. Isolated, we’re small. Inside, we’re big,” he said.

dissatisfaction

It also echoes a generalized dissatisfaction of the parties with the result of the command of the commissions, in which most of the main presidencies were with the PL or the PT. “The PT has taken everything it could and even more. Now we are able to occupy more equitable spaces. If the Chamber has opted for this model, we must get involved”.

For the leader of the PT federation, Zeca Dirceu (PT-PR), even if the two blocs are neither for nor against the government, dialogue is facilitated. “Talking to 20 leaders, party by party, is very difficult for any government,” said Zeca Dirceu.
